Nail art: Square

| Wednesday, 25 June 2014

I bought some new nail art tools (mini brushes and striping tape) and I just couldn't wait to try them out! I'm very satisfied with the results, the little squares turned out totally adorable. I chose to use the striping tape as a guide to make squares and instead of leaving them on my nails, I removed them to show a clear white line underneath.

What kind of designs do you do one your nails?

After doing a few nail art, I see that I tend to gravitate towards geometric and symmetric styles; I wonder what that means? I'm square? Next time I'll have to try something a little more dramatic. For now, here's what I'm sporting these days.

Sally Hansen nail art tool kit

Likes: Personally, I like the small size, but then again, I like all my tools small. They're easy to use and seem durable. The brush hair is soft and holds well together for precise designs.

Dislikes: The only thing I don't like is the orange color of the dotting tool, but that doesn't affect it's functionality.

Nail art: Blue with white polka dot

diy tutorial blue and white polka dot nail art

Up until recently, the only person I had ever seen wearing nail polish was my grand-mother. So I rarely ever wore any, except when I was little and my grand-ma would pass me some; you know, a girly activity to do together. ...then I was inspired by Memorable Days & Burkatron, so I decided to give it a shot. I was amazed at how fun it was and how pretty it turned out. I'll definitely be doing more so stay tuned!

4. Apply a coat of clear nail polish to seal.

It's important to add the clear top coat to seal otherwise your design will rub off within a day.

Sally Hansen nail art pen

Likes: Easy to apply. Dries quickly. Comes in many different colors. Can remove mistakes with water. Looks pretty.

Dislikes: A bit expensive for what it is ($8 CAD). If you don't apply a clear top coat of polish it rubs off within a day. It's very watery. Need to reapply more than once to get desired result.

4 must-have baby treasures

shophie the giraffe and touch ring toy

What toys do your kids have?

Finding suitable toys for my child was challenging. I wanted items that were stimulating and not toxic when chewed. The internet age has placed a lot of information at everyone's fingertips and it isn't always reassuring. Maybe we're being too careful, maybe not, either way, I rather not take the chance. Yes, information may change, but for now, the rule is: BPA, PVC and Phtalates free.

SOPHIE THE GIRAFFE by Vulli: ♥♥♥♥♥
Does every baby have this toy? Really? At first, it seemed so...dull, but then, my son fell in love. I swear, its the first toy he reaches for. He grabs her, bites her, squeezes her. Its really quite cute. She stimulates sight, hearing & touch. She is made out of latex rubber; BPA, PVC and Phthalates free. The paint is also made out of latex, with added food paint. The long neck and small legs make her easy to grab, squeeze and bite. As unlikely as it is, the only negative side is the possibility of choking on the long legs.

TOUCH RING - 4 RAINBOW RINGS by Heimess: ♥♥♥♥
The colors are very stimulating, the clinging sound is soft and the different rings challenge dexterity. The Heimess toys are safe for babies; the are made with wood and non toxic, saliva resistant colors. The only thing I don't like is that not much information can be found about this toy on the Heimess website.

stacking cups and baby wool slippers

STACKING CUPS by Green Toys: ♥♥♥♥
I love how versatile these cups are; you can stack them into a tower, you can sort sizes into nests and you can use them as cups to scoop and pour in the bath. They are made out of recycled plastic milk containers and are BPA, PVC and Phthalates free. The only things I don't like are the colors (let's just say they could be a bit more stimulating, like red blue and yellow) and the fact that they are a bit hard to stack into a tower.

WOOL BABY SLIPPERS by Padraigs: ♥♥♥♥♥
These slippers are a-ma-sing. Seriously. They are made with pure wool and are crocheted by hand with extra soft sheepskin lining and tough leather soles. They come in a variety of colors and sizes (including for adults). They "breathe" for year-long comfort.

yeh! yogourt et café

yeh yogourt et cafe logo

On a relaxing weekend, during a really hot day, my fiance took me to Yeh! Yogourt et Café. It is a Montreal-based ice cream store which I highly recommend. I must say, it is the best one I have ever been to and I can't seem to stop going back! The ice cream is made on site with a perfect combination of fat free yoghurt, milk, probiotics, sugar & other ingredients which results in a not-too-sweet frozen dessert. They also have a "make your own smores", "make your own crepe" and a "make your own cookie" section, where you get to build it yourself on-site.

instructions for yeh yogourt et cafe

I find their logo very creative. The simplicity & colors are very appealing. The directions to order are very clear & simple. The design is classy with a modern edge.

ice cream sampling

The staff is very friendly & you can sample all of the ice creams for free before you make your choice... how cool is that?

healthy toppings

You get to pick whatever topping you want, there are fresh, juicy fruits...

not so healthy toppings

...nuts, chocolate, coconut, spices & sauces. The total cost is 48 cents/ounce.

ice cream with toppings

Here is the final result... wow!

julie claveau enjoying yeh yogourt et cafe ice cream

Here I am, enjoying my well deserved ice cream. I absolutely love how there is fake grass inside with gigantic cushions to lie on!

The only thing I would recommend is sugar free ice cream for diabetics. Since they already have a lactose free choice, this would be a great addition.

ovarium

entrance to ovarium

Ovarium is a spa located in Montreal. I went for the first time two weeks ago. It was so relaxing! This is the main entrance; the external architecture of the building is absolutely gorgeous.

waiting room at the ovarium

Directly inside the entrance, there is a waiting room. The chairs are super comfortable, and staff speak very softly to not disturb customers.

tea and sea shells

They offer free herbal tea; either vanilla or peach. There is soft ambiance/relaxation music playing in the background and the decoration is very simple with lots of plants.

floating bath egg

Floating bath: $40 CDN ♥♥♥♥♥
Although not required, I suggest taking a floating bath before your massage. It lasts for 1 hour and it contains 50% water (at body temperature) plus 50% epsom salts. the combination of the two make you float gravity-less to relieve stress. you can float with, or without music. at the end, you shower in the same room (soap, shampoo & conditioner is provided). scentless deodorant, q-tips, a bath robe & a bag to carry your things are provided.

Massage: $60 CDN ♥♥♥♥♥
My favorite type of massage is the Lomi Atsu. The massage therapists are all very professional, they communicate with you to find out what you need & do their best to always satisfy your requests.

Price: very affordable ♥♥♥♥♥

Staff: Friendly, calm, accommodating ♥♥♥♥♥

Atmosphere: Soothing, relaxing ♥♥♥♥♥

My rating: I'm hooked!! I can't stop going back! ♥♥♥♥♥

Note: I would like to suggest adding more choices of tea, and different music options.

Xochimilco

colorful boats xochimilco

Xochimilco is such a beautiful place. It's like Venice but with super colorful boats on a series of water canals...with murky water that sometimes smells a bit bad.

michelada corona beer drink

Being married to a Mexican, I got a pretty special tour of some awesome Mexican sites (tourist and non-tourist attractions); like Teotihuacan. Am I lucky or what?

mariachi playing on boat

On the water, you can find other barges playing music for a fee, or selling food/drinks/items. You can also stop on the water side and visit nurseries and other cute shops.

mexican man with sombrero on boat

First impression: Oooo, colors!!

Price: about $16 CDN for the boat ride, with free parking (if you drive there).

Cleanliness: The water seemed very dirty, it even smelled bad at times, but it's because its stale rain water. It's not actually dirty, but still, not very pleasant.

Accessibility: Situated inside of Mexico city, you can go by cab from the city center for about $25 CDN.

Service: The person driving the boat was really sweet and informative. The locals on their own boats were selling us snacks and small items as we floated by them.

End feeling: So romantic! I definitely want to go again.

teotihuacán

Teotihuacan temples

These are the Aztec sun & moon pyramids near Mexico City. My boyfriend brought me there on a Sunday afternoon. Did you know Mexicans don't pay to visit their own historical sites on Sundays? How cool is that?

Teotihuacan temple

The site is absolutely amazing. Just thinking that people built everything with their bare hands and minimal tools is unthinkable. Makes me feel like we're becoming more and more physically lazy every century.

city of Teotihuacan

My boyfriend was explaining that there is a day in the year, where people come to absorb the energy of the sun (at the sun temple obviously). They climb up the pyramid wearing white, lift their arms and face towards the sun and stand there. I found it quite interesting.

flowers at Teotihuacan

First impression: Oh. My. Goodness. I cant believe I'm here! o.o

Price: About $4 CDN. Yup.

Cleanliness: Well... there's the obvious dirt & grass, but it's to be expected on an archaeological site soooo... other than that it was very clean and smelled fresh.

Accessibility: 48 miles from Mexico city, accessible by bus, taxi or car. I went with my boyfriend's family.

Service: There was a tour guide option but we didn't take it, everything is explained on posters at every stop. There were also lots of little merchants selling souvenirs.

End feeling: I want to go back!! I'm an archeologist wanna be, so it was heaven for me.
