Mexico 2015

mayan palace acapulco mexico

You may have noticed that things have been quiet around here for the past 2 weeks. My family and I just came back from our Mexico vacation. Every few years we go and visit my in-laws in Mexico D.F. It's hard to live so far from family, but the bright side is that we get to travel. Right? ;)

For this trip, we decided to mix things up and spent half the time in Acapulco. We hadn't been to the beach in quite some time and we wanted the kids to see the ocean. Our family joined us at the Mayan Palace and we spent quality time together by the pool, or the beach, every-single-day.

It was the first time we went to a hotel since having kids. I was a bit worried about traveling with my son who has an egg allergy because we can't exactly go to restaurants and I didn't know what kind of foods we would find at the local supermarket. I was so pleased to see that, as discussed with the hotel staff, the room had a complete mini kitchen, so my mother-in-law and I were able to cook delicious meals. Plus, we saved a whole bunch of money, win-win! The food at the store was all marked for allergens too so that also made things much less stressful.

As for traveling with kids, it wasn't all that hard other than the obvious need for a schedule and organization. We tried to keep their regular meal and nap times intact to avoid unnecessary tantrums (not that we ever get any, but I didn't want to adventure down the road of sleep-deprived babies). Besides, it kept sunburns at bay since their nap time is usually around noon to 3PM.

In the mornings we went to the pool and in the evening to the beach, next time I'll do the opposite though because the pool water was much too cold in the morning and there was no shade for the 11AM sun! It would have been better to play in the sand at the beach early in the morning, in the shade, and keep the pool for the late afternoon when the sun was less strong and the water warmer. Eh, you learn with experience right? We still had a lot of fun though, the kids played with their inflatable boats and goggles, and we made tons of sand castles.

We took the kids on a horse ride on the beach. They absolutely loved it, and so did we! :) But...did you know that those poor horses are usually starved? My husband was saying that the owners, usually poor, keep most of the money for their family and the poor animals go without food or drink for much too long. Sad isn't it?

My in-laws babysat the kids on one night which gave my husband and I some time to go out dancing. BEACH DANCING PARTY. Like, um, yeah! I almost forgot what it was like to lose myself in music. I love to dance. So hubby and I danced salsa until our feet hurt.

Before I left for my vacation, I had asked a few of you what you'd like me to write about from my trip and I have a few posts coming up about local food, a drink recipe, and some other fun things so stay tuned!

Until then, a Happy Easter to all of you! Don't eat too much chocolate. ;)

Life lately

Hi everyone! Here's a little insight into my life lately.

Lately...I purchased umbrella lights. Actually, my husband bought them for me. He saw how stressed I was all the time about taking pictures during daylight (which is nearly impossible when you want to spend all your daytime playing with your babies), and decided it would be give me more freedom. Now I can take beautiful pictures late at night after my kids go to sleep and I can enjoy playing with them - worry free. I'm so excited to start taking more mockup pictures, I love creating messes!! I've been taking color coded pictures of random items in my house, trying to do pretty setups. It's seriously a lot of fun.

Lately...winter arrived and I've been enjoying the slower beat of things. Especially cuddling inside with my kids. We also put our 2 year old on skis for the first time this year and I wasn't sure he would be able to do it but he surprised me. He's actually quite good at it and he enjoys it a lot!

Lately...I've been hard at work updating my branding. I'm experimenting with my style, trying to define my colors and make my blog a little bit more user friendly. I'm doing everything on my own and it's quite the adventure; from coding, to web design, everything is made by yours truly. I'd love to hear what you guys think. Any constructive criticism?

Lately...my oldest had pneumonia and we spent 3 days in the hospital. It was really hard seeing him so sick. It was the first time one of my children was hospitalized and since I'm still breastfeeding my youngest, I was only able to be at the hospital with him during the nights. It happened just before we were supposed to leave for our Christmas vacation (which we had to cancel) so my husband was off work (thank goodness!) and he spent the days with our baby at the hospital. No one tells you how hard it is to explain things and entertain a 2 year old all day long (and night) when he's confined to a hospital bed. Oh, and by the way, when the nurse misses the intravenous 20 times in a row and they have to tie your screaming child down - not cool. His poor little hand was all swollen and bruised. He's feeling much better now and I'm glad that's over. We made the best of our Christmas holidays at home and took some much relaxation time.

Lately...I've been sporting my Rudsak coat. It's the Atelier Noir collection which can be found at Costco. It's a gorgeous design but I'm a bit disappointed with quality. I find it doesn't have enough filling and it doesn't really keep me warm enough. I've worn it for 2 winters and this time around I'm layering it with a shirt + sweater but next time around I'm probably going to go with a real Rudsak coat, even if it's more expensive.

Lately...I mastered my egg free gingerbread cookie recipe, which I'm planning on making a Christmas tradition, along with my homemade hot chocolate. :)

Lately...I've been spending a lot of quality time with both of my kids. I found it extremely difficult to be away from my kids so often when I returned to work after my first child. So this time around, I'm keeping both of my kids at home and playing with them as much as humanly possible (as in, I'm always on the floor). We have car races, screaming contests, story times, sword fighting, quiet eating times, lots of cuddle...and of course, the messy house that comes with all that. I'm absolutely and completely in love. Oh, and I stole my son's popcorn #random.

Lately...Em has been in a building mood, so we've been making lego villages and block towers.

Lately...Ez started crawling and man is this mommy thing getting excitingly fun. Em is such an amazing big brother. As parents, I guess we're never sure how things are going to work out between siblings, but I'm happy to report that in our home, it was love at first sight. I was a bit worried about what would happen when Ez started crawling and stealing Em's toys, but you know what? He's perfectly happy about it and he even changes his games to suit his younger brother's abilities. Isn't that amazing?

Lately... fall has come and gone. Didn't it happen fast? Seriously though, one minute it was bright, warm and sunny, the next the leaves were on the ground and we were back in our winter clothes.

I kind of wish it was still summer, but I have to admit that fall was gorgeous. I love the cool breeze and the all the colorful leaves.

Speaking of which, did you see what I made with all pretty branches and acorns I picked up (garland + mobile)? Pretty cool no? Have you made anything with things you've picked up outside before? If you have, leave me a link, I'd love to check it out!

Lately... Halloween happened. Yup. I realize this is a bit overdue but I just had to share with you my Halloween costume; my first try at a sugar skull. It wasn't that great, but I learned a few things about drug store face paint. It sucks. It's super thick and sticky. It's impossible to spread on your face, and don't even get me started on taking it off... Anyway. Next time I'll try with makeup. Hopefully it makes things easier!

We also decorated our yard a little. Nothing too fancy. A few small carved pumpkins (our very first - not bad right?) and a tombstone. We're starting small and building up over the next few years because money doesn't grow on trees (god knows I wish it did).

Lately... I decided to try some of the Honest Co. products. I really love what they stand for so I thought I'd give them a go. I'll be sharing a review at a later time.

Lately... We've been trying to enjoy the last glimpse of warmth and blue skies by taking long walks and going to the park. We also visited my parent's cabin and took our son on his first boat ride. He was a bit scared and uneasy about the whole thing, but he stayed in the boat, so I guess you can call that a win.

Lately... Snow. WHY oh WHY? That is all.

What have you been up to lately?

Lately... I visited Michael's. I swear to god, every time I go in there I come out with 10 times as much stuff as I originally went to buy. I guess I'm just an impulsive craft buyer. I try to stay away from craft stores as much as possible for that reason.

Lately... World of Warcraft baby! I actually don't play that much anymore, but I'm kind of excited for the new expansion coming! Like, really excited.

Lately... I bought myself some super cute notebooks in an attempt to get my home organized. That has yet to happen.

Lately... My family and I went apple picking. So. Much. Fun. We're planning on making this a yearly fall activity. I've been creating apple recipes so stay tuned!

Lately... Just a selfie, 'cause ya know...

Lately... Gosh I love snuggling with my newborn. I just can't get enough of that new baby smell and super soft skin. Can he stay like this forever pwease? Those adorably pure smiles just melt my heart.

Lately... Baby color stimulation. Have to get those little brain cells warmed up!

Lately... I started a mini series over on my Instagram about similar colored items in my home. I get bored sometimes.

Lately... My 2 year old son just can't get enough of his little brother. He always wants to be close to him. It's just so adorable and he's so gentle with him. He has such a beautiful soul.

Lately... we tried going to Movies in the Park by Virgin Radio 96.5. Every Wednesday night during the summer the radio station shows free movies in select parks around the city. We usually try to go a few times every year, but this summer, weather simply was not on our side.

Lately... I've been trying out some new beauty products from Sephora; most of them are Tarte products. So far I like them, but they do make my skin feel a bit dry.

Lately... I bought the cutest panda slippers at Simons. I'm a little disappointed though, they're not as comfortable as they could be but I still love them, just because they're cute.

Lately... we did some renovations in our yard. Some of the wood on our patio was starting to rot, so my parents came over and helped us change a few of the planks.

Lately... I bought my very first red lipstick. Yay!

Lately... I've been drinking way too much coffee.

Lately... I've been playing with my babies a lot. M loves to play outside so I bought him some water guns and we've been chasing each other around the yard on warm days. I just love playing with him so much, he's always so happy.

Lately... We picked some fresh veggies from our garden. M really liked helping me cook them. As a matter of fact, I think that his involvement in the preparation process encouraged him to eat his greens!

Lately... I visited the local nursery and bought some new plants for our home. That's nothing new though, I'm always chilling out at the nursery. ;)

Lately... we welcomed my husbands parents into our home for a month. We're in Canada and they're in Mexico so we don't get to see them often, but when we do, it's so much fun.

Lately... I was nominated by my friend Elba of Live Colorful for the Most Inspirational Blogger Award. Thanks Elba! I thought it would be fun to give my answers in a short video. Hope you enjoy it!

Where to start, so much has happened lately...

Lately... we attended my sister's wedding. It was absolutely amazing. She never ceases to amaze me with all her skills and hard work. She made everything for her wedding; from the decor to the games, the mass booklet and the invitations. I love you little sister, and I am very proud of you.

Lately... we welcomed home a 4th member to our family. Yup, I delivered my baby. I'll be posting his birth story soon.

Lately... I bought a 50mm f1.4 lens for my Canon DSLR and I absolutely love it. It's a bit of a learning curve, but I feel like my photography is about to hit another level.

Lately... I attended my very first blogging conference hosted by Made in Blog. It was a wonderful experience. I learned a whole bunch and got to meet some amazing local bloggers. Most importantly, I learned that blogging is about staying authentic and true to yourself, without comparison or competition.

Lately... we celebrated my first son's second birthday. He's 2 already, isn't that crazy? When people say time flies and children grow up too fast... it's true! I really have to start appreciating each little moment more. Anyway, I have a whole series of posts coming up on things I made/prepared for his birthday so stay tuned; the first of the series was my eggless white cake recipe, which is amazing by the way, so you should definitely try it out.

Lately... I started thinning out our garden and we enjoyed some very strong tasting radishes. My son was a little shocked.

Lately... I've been taking the Blog Life course by A Beautiful Mess and I love it! I haven't completed much of it yet because I've been very busy, but I've started planning a bit more what I want to blog about and how I want to organize it. I intend to start documenting my home decorating, give some family insights as well as many DIY projects. Lots of new stuff to comes so stay tuned.

Lately... we spent a lot of time outdoors. The winter was so long this year that every opportunity we get to go outside, we do. We went to Parc Safari and loved it. As a matter of fact, our car almost got eaten by a camel. It was awesome. We also spent a day at the beach and had a picnic at a local park. We also started some work on our yard and cooked BBQ.

Lately... we bought our 21 month old son his very first violin. Crazy? You might think so. His concentration span might not be very long, but his learning capacity is insane (much like any child of that age). He may not yet be able to play, but after a month he can hold the violin and the bow correctly, as well as move the bow across the strings almost in the right spot. All this with only about 10 minutes of practice a week (randomly).

Lately... I started playing World of Warcraft again; when my little one is sleeping. I don't have a lot of time, but I try to enjoy it as much as I can amidst everything else I want/need to do.

Lately... we visited IKEA to buy a bed side desk for our son. We chose a single, white EXPEDIT shelving unit with a 2-drawer insertion. It's the perfect size. We're trying to do a gradual transition to a twin bed before the new baby comes. So far so good! We just put the twin bed mattress on the floor so he doesn't get hurt if he falls. He just loves it because he can easily climb up or down on his own, and he can do running belly flaps. Lol.

Lately... I bought some cool paper straws in preparation for our son's second birthday. I want to make it extra special.

Lately... I may or may not have eaten all the marshmallows out of a Lucky Charms box.

Lately... we spent some time in downtown Montreal and ate at Schwartz. It's this tiny little smoked meat restaurant in the heart of the city. It looks like nothing on the outside, and the inside is very plain, but the food... OH-EM-GEE. Seriously, the best smoked meat you have ever had in your life.

Lately... my skin has been clearing up and looking oh-so good. I love what pregnancy hormones do to your body (not counting the first trimester).

Lately... we finally found our fancy dinner set. It took us forever to agree on dishes, yes, dishes. Then one day, out of the blue, my husband spotted these gorgeous mint patterned plates and said: "I like those!" My first thought was; "Really?!?! Oh my goodness, me too!" So we bought the whole set at Home Sense. Such an awesome store for random things.

Lately... I've been catching up on projects which have been on standby. Home decorating, recipe trials and lots of snuggle time with my baby.

I am so totally impatiently waiting for summer. It seems like winter has been longer and more depressing this year. Was that just me? Anyway, just seeing these pretty flowers from last year makes me happy. Bring it on spring! :)

Trying to make recipes from scratch doesn't always turn out the way you'd think. These mini cupcakes look pretty delicious, but they weren't that good. Lol. They were supposed to be coconut/pineapple flavored, but they were dry and tasted bland. Next try maybe. :)

a weekend into the past; ice house

| Tuesday, 25 March 2014

Ice what? Ice house! What's an ice house you say? It's man's ingenious idea before refrigeration. Have you ever wondered how people kept their food cold before fridges existed?

My parents own a century-old cabin between two major regions in Quebec. It was the "hotel" where people slept for the night before continuing on their horse-led trip between the two regions. The cabin directly next to ours was the "kitchen". Naturally, the "ice house" is with the kitchen.

Every year, our neighbors invite us to help them with "the ice". This means cutting giant blocks of ice from the frozen lake and bringing them into the insulated "ice house".

The modern way to do this is with an electric chain saw, an axe, ice pliers and a skidoo with sled. Obviously that's not exactly how they did it a hundred years ago. It was probably just with an axe, the pliers and a horse sleigh.

First you saw the ice into a grid (making squares). Then you use the axe and slam it into a cut to detach the bottom part. Using the pliers you pick them up and place them on the sled (it's actually more of a side throw, lol).

The skidoo brings them up to the cabin and using another pair of pliers, someone stacks them into the ice house.

It usually takes about 4-5 hours depending on how many people join in to help. Once all is done, we enjoy a nice warm meal together and spend the rest of the weekend chill-axing. :P

You're probably wondering how the ice doesn't melt during the summer. The ice house is insulated. Simple as that... and all the ice piled up together creates this kind of "cold effect" which minimizes the melting time. As well, when we use the fridge, there is a separate door to where the ice is kept, so you aren't constantly letting warm air into the ice room.

I really enjoy these little escapes into the past. We may not have the opportunity to do this forever, but for now, I'm taking it all in. :)

Do you take part in any activities of the past?

Yup, selfie au natural. Lol.

the guilt of a working mother

| Wednesday, 19 February 2014

white shimmering snow

Wow... has it really been that long since I've blogged? My mind is constantly bursting with ideas but time has been practically non-existent in my part of the world.

October, November and December were hard months for me; the first trimester of my second pregnancy was nothing like my first. I had pretty bad morning sickness (or should I say all-day-sickness) and working was draining every ounce of energy in my body; I ended up sleeping from 5PM to 6AM. Thank goodness I have a good husband; he ended up doing all the chores, cooking and taking care of our son.

As for the winter days (December, January, February), they've been slightly depressing. I leave home for work, it's dark. I come home from work, it's dark. I rush in the morning to prepare my son (eat, diaper, snowsuit), then I rush to daycare/work (hopefully beating traffic...because apparently no one remembers how to drive in the snow) and then rush back to daycare to pick up my son. I get home and cook as quickly as I can. All of this, hoping that I might have at least 30 minutes of free time at the end of my day to dedicate entirely to my son.

No day light and no "me" time pretty much sums up to no pictures (so sad). On the weekends, I catch up on everything I didn't have time for during the week; laundry, groceries, meal preparation for the following week, cleaning, and most importantly, playing with my son. Seriously though, I know I'm fortunate; everyone is in good health, we love each other, we have food and a home. Sadly, it doesn't take away the guilt.

This is what my weekly schedule looks like. Keep in mind that in the winter there's a lot more traffic and it takes longer to get ready with all the snow gear and the shoveling.

weekly schedule
6:00am to 6:30am - Eat breakfast together, brush teeth, change diaper, get dressed
6:30am to 7:30am - Drop off my son at daycare & drive to work
7:30am to 3:30pm - Work
3:30pm to 4:30pm - Pick up my son at daycare & drive home
4:30pm to 6:00pm - Prepare & eat supper together
6:00pm to 6:45pm - Play with my son
6:45pm to 7:00pm - Bed time routine for my son
7:00pm to 8:00pm - Mommy and daddy time

On Monday nights I do Prenatal Yoga, on Friday nights my son has swimming, on Saturday mornings my husband teaches squash downtown and on Sunday mornings my son has a music class.

canadian sled ride with my baby

I am a working mom.

Sending my baby to daycare after a year of maternity leave was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do and it still is. It feels like someone else gets to raise my child. Someone else gets to see him learn and grow. It seriously breaks my heart. This little being is such a sweetheart. He bursts with positive energy, smiles all the time, and hands out plenty of free kisses. He is my everything and I wish I could spend every waking minute with him.

Maternity leave was amazing. I had plenty of time with my son and I even had some time for myself (photography, blogging, cooking, crafts...). I had time to clean, time to cook, time to do laundry, and time to enjoy life with my husband.

I always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom after my children were born; especially during the first 5 years of their life. Unfortunately, our current financial reality just doesn't allow it. Which is why I returned to work. I try to tell myself it's for the best and that he's getting a chance to socialize with other children his own age. But is it for the best? I hope so.

I want a strong lasting bond with my child and I'm afraid that by spending so little time with him will make this dream impossible to achieve.

My dear sweet boy,

Know that mommy is always thinking of you. You are the light in my life; my reason to be.

I love you, forever.

mosaiculture at the montreal botanical gardens

| Sunday, 1 September 2013

The summer is almost over and although I'm excited for fall & winter, I really don't feel like we HAD a summer. It rained most of the time, and on the few days the sun came out, there were so many mosquitoes that going outside really wasn't pleasant. We did manage to cross off a few activities from our summer bucket list though, which made me pretty happy.

I absolutely adore the outdoors, gardening, and flowers. This year, my husband took us to the Montreal botanical gardens. They had an amazing international mosaiculture exhibition; it was breathtaking. The above picture was my favorite mosaic. It's a 15 meter tall representation of mother earth. The amount of work that goes into planning, building, growing and maintaining the plants is unthinkable.

During our trip, I practiced my macro photography skills. I must admit that after experiencing the full reach of manual photography, I just can't go back to point and shoot. One of my future projects is writing down everything I learned.

Have you tried manual photography on a DSLR camera? Do you like it?

This exposition is the world's most prestigious competition of horticultural art and it's not hard to see why, just look at the details in the above mosaic: the fingers, the clothing and the hair. Making it is something, keeping it looking like this is something else.

200 experts from Canada, Belgium, China, South Korea, Spain, USA, France, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and across Africa created over 40 plant-life sculptures, some big enough to walk through. This year's theme was "land of hope" focused on biodiversity; the artists also portrayed their nationality and culture.

This chameleon is built entirely with succulents. Isn't it amazing what you can do with plants? I never would have thought you could make sculptures with them. Some people are so creative it blows my mind.

I'm so glad we were able to see this exhibition. I don't think my son will remember seeing these amazing mosaics but I'm sure it will return to Montreal in the future. We will definitely go again.

Have you ever seen any mosaicultures? Do you like gardening?

Here I am, posing in front of one of the first mosaics. It's a lot bigger than it looks, I'm standing about 20 meters away.

A fun night out, how i met my husband

| Wednesday, 17 July 2013

Last weekend, my husband, son and I went out for some hot chocolate at Juliette & Chocolat. It was so nice to get out of the house and enjoy the city a bit. Even though our life has been filled with many magical moments ever since we became parents, I miss going out with my husband. The last time I remember going out alone with him was when we were dating. Speaking of which, I don't think I ever wrote how we first met.

I'm sure you all know that I absolutely love to dance. Strangely though, I was never really a fan of salsa until I met my husband. A friend of mine had convinced me to try it out. The very first time I accompanied her, my husband (who was a random man at the time) kept waiting in line to dance with me... and every time we danced, he had this huge smile stamped on his face. He later told me that my smile and passion for dancing kept him coming back. At the end of the night, he asked for my number. I didn't really feel comfortable with the idea, so instead, I gave him my email so he could add me on Facebook. Every weekend he would send me private messages asking if I was going salsa dancing. I replied no quite a few times, because quite frankly, salsa dancing still wasn't my thing. A few months later, on a weekend where I needed to unwind, I said yes. We spent a part of the evening sipping a deliciously creamy milk hot chocolate at Juliette & Chocolat, followed by an evening of hot salsa dancing at Club 649. This later became a weekly routine. We fell in love shortly after that. :)

Juliette & Chocolat is chocolate heaven, literally. They offer a wide variety of imported chocolates with unique flavors and serve them practically in any way imaginable: grandma or classic style, dark, milk or white, in shots, milk-shakes or smoothies, with fruits or spices, and even as alcoholic cocktails. They also serve meal crepes and salads; perfect for a quick boost in energy before an evening of dancing... that velvety grandma hot chocolate will always pull me back in.

Club 649 is a Latin night club. There are four reasons why I enjoy this club. First, knowing how to dance is not a requirement; they offer free dancing classes (beginner, intermediate & Brazilian) Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 to 11pm. Second, the cover charge is only $5, yes... $5. Third, the age group varies quite a bit; anywhere between 20 and 50. Last, you don't need a dance partner; there are plenty of friendly single men and women waiting around the dance floor just waiting to dance with you. Plus, the atmosphere is fun and relaxed.

So there you have it, that's how I met my husband. I seriously can't wait to go out dancing again, I miss it a lot. Until then, we'll just enjoy a hot chocolate in town once in a while.

Where do you go to enjoy the nightlife?

If you want to know of other awesome places to go out at night in Montreal, you can check out the nightlife category of tourisme-montreal.org.

my very first video

| Monday, 24 June 2013

I just made a short video for my "about me" page. I'm really happy with how it turned out; short and simple. I don't know about you guys, but I find it so much fun to watch videos. I'm planning on making more so stay tuned!

We had planned to go camping with my sister this weekend, but the weather isn't all that great and we were all pretty tired, so we ended up relaxing at home most of the weekend. We also did some shopping and worked on our yard/house. I put some white lace curtains in our bedroom and it looks gorgeous against the baby blue walls. I'm enjoying decorating!

What have you been up to this weekend?

What does your mom mean to you? What does being a mom mean to you?

A little late I know, but I hear late is better than never. So, happy Mother's Day! The lovely Nicole from Her and Nicole had the wonderful idea to ask a bunch of women what their mom, and being a mom, meant to them. This is what I answered.

MY MOM ...is the source of my inspiration. She made me who I am today and sets an extraordinary example for me. She always believes in me and gives me all the support I could ever wish for. Merci maman, je t'aime beaucoup!

BEING A MOM ...has put my entire existence back into perspective. It makes me understand what life is really all about; and I rediscover it through the innocent eyes of my child. As a mom, I learned what true happiness is and to love unconditionally. I also discovered my inner strength, and my ability to put another being's needs before my own. I am so fortunate to have an angel in my life.

I will be posting my summer bucket list soon, with a free printable! my son and I spent some time outside on Monday, it was really warm out. He crawled around on the grass and tried to eat some. It was so adorable. Here's my last lately, according to instagram post.
